Practical information

The Master Seminar Biological Networks will take place 17-21 January, 2022

  • Organizers: Julio Saez-Rodriguez and Carl Herrmann (Medical Faculty Heidelberg)

  • Technical requirements: each student should have its own laptop with RStudio installed and running!

We will assume some programming skills in R, as well as knowledge of basic statistical concepts (P-value, statistical tests, multiple testing,…). Please contact us if you have questions related to these points!

Content

The purpose of this seminar is an introduction to the main computational aspects of biological network analysis. We will cover:

  • basic concepts of graph theory

  • regulatory networks and pathways

  • logical modelling

  • causality inference through bayesian networks

Each day will cover a specific topic including lectures and practical sessions.

Final exam

We will provide a list of articles covering some of the topics discussed in the sessions. The students will choose one article and read it carefully. The final grade will be based on an oral exam (~15 minutes) with questions related to the paper chosen by the student (brief summary of the main findings, some questions on more technical aspects,…). At least one additional question will be related to other topics discussed during the seminar not covered by the article.

This is the link to the list of papers (no more than 2 students per paper!)
